Is It Time To Prescribe Some ICD-10 Panic?

“Maybe it’s time to prescribe a healthy dose of panic” is an article by Carl Natale outlining the results of a survey showing that providers aren’t panicking when it comes to ICD-10. But this survey also shows that providers are not very far along in their ICD-10 preparations… Carl’s Excerpt: “I don’t normally advise panic, but maybe it’s time to make it part of our ICD-10 preparations. Acute Appendicitis with Laparoscopic Appendectomy

A 33 year old man visits the emergency department complaining of pain in his right lower abdomen.   Documented Diagnosis: Acute Appendicitis. Documented Procedure: Laparoscopic Appendectomy Other Documentation of the Encounter: “I spoke with the patient preoperatively regarding the goals, benefits, and risks of surgery. All of his questions were answered. He then received preoperative antibiotics, heparin, and bilateral lower extremity SCDs prior to induction with general anesthesia. Once the patient was asleep, his left arm was tucked to the side. Care was taken to appropriately pad the ulnar nerve. The abdomen was prepped and draped in standard fashion. Time out was performed verifying the correct patient for the procedure.
